Red coloured tint to the top text edge. Illustrated dustwrapper with gilt and white coloured titles to the front panel and back strip. When it was first published in Lippincott's Magazine in 1891 the story had a happy ending. But, when it was published later in book form the same year, book was longer and had a tragic ending – as the writer had conceived it. The book has caused great discussion, but it parallels the author's own life of childhood and a disappointed youthful love. A little rubbing of the book corners and softening of the back strip edges.
