To have been permitted to lift but a corner of the veil of mystery that has shrouded this people from those of other lands is an honour that is amply sufficient for me" (preface). Illustrated with 27 photographic plates, this uncommon work presents China social life and cultures during the late Qing dynasty and early Republic of China from a western scholar point of view. Discusses topics such as "the land and its law", "how the empire is governed", "the Chinese military system literary degrees", "mountain temples", "punishments", "doctors and doctoring", "money and money lending", "farmers and farming", "peeps into Chinese life", and others. John Macgowan(1835-1922), Belfast-born missionary in China with the London Missionary Society, founder of the foot emancipation Society which fought the custom of foot binding. Description:
Shanghai: North China Daily News & Herald Ltd,, 1909. First edition, first printing, in the scarce green cloth variant binding, of this introduction to Chinese life by one of the founders of the Heavenly Foot Society, the first organization formed to oppose foot-binding. The author (1835-1922), a British missionary and a member of the London Missionary Society, first travelled to China in 1860 and spent the next 50 years travelling and living in the country. He wrote multiple works based on these experiences, and also published a dictionary of the Amoy dialect. Copies of Lights and Shadows were also bound in tan cloth. While there is no discernible priority between the two variants, copies in tan cloth are the more common in commerce. Octavo. Original green diagonal-grained cloth, spine lettered in black, front cover lettered and decorated in yellow and black. Half-tone photographic frontispiece, 20 similar plates in text. Cloth lightly soiled and rubbed, rear inner hinge just starting but still… Read More
