Vienna & Paris, London, & New York: [Chic Parisien]; Les editions Leon Claude, 4, Rue Rochambeau, January, 1932. Folio. 9.25 x 13 in. 8 pp. With 12 hand-coloured pochoir fashion plates (8 printed on thick blue-tinted paper stock, some w/ metallic silver ink highlights), 4 blue-tinted plates of lingerie, 1 text illustration. Thick silver metallic softcovers, decorative lettering and cover illustration in orange, black, white & silver (minor scuffingm rubbing, minor creasing front cover), still a VG exemplar. First edition of this very scarce, and spectacular fashion design magazine supplement for women’s lingerie from the early 1930s produced by the famed Chic Parisien publishing house, owned by Atelier Bachwitz, and printed by Leon Claude who also issued the Le Gout Parisien fashion magazine. These designs show the growing movement away from the straight narrow gamin look for women in the 1920s, with two-piece undergarments becoming the norm, trimmed with lace and feminine details, as well as employing the new Rayon and rubber elastic textiles. Pre-code Hollywood glamor popularized by Carole Lombard, Kathryn Crawford, Josephine Dunn, and others influenced lingerie fashions heavily. Arnold Bachwitz (1854-1930) built one of the most successful and influential fashion journals with Chic Parisien, reaching countries around the world, and influencing trends in Paris, Vienna, London, and New York. In addition, Atelier Bachwitz published over 50 other fashion-related magazines, and his widow Rosine (1853-1942) continued the tradition through the 1930s until the business was seized by the Nazis, and she was put to death during the Holocaust.
