About This Item

New York:: Simon & Schuster,, (2009). SIGNED -. Near fine in illustrated wrappers.. First thus- a trade paperback. The author's second novel, short listed for the Costa Award. "What happens on the beach is brutal. . . it braids the fates of a 16-year-old Nigerian orphan (who calls herself Little Bee) and a well-off British couple - journalists trying to repair their strained marriage with a free holiday - who should have stayed behind their resort's walls. The tide of that event carries Little Bee back to their world - she shows us the infinite rifts in a globalized world, where any distance can be crossed in a day - with the right papers - and 'no one likes each other, but everyone likes U2.' Where you have to give up the safety you'd assumed as your birthright if you decide to save the girl gazing at you through razor wire, left to the wolves of a failing state." (Mari Malcolm) SIGNED on the title page with a green author's "Authorized" stamp. Notes. 271 pp plus a reading group guide and questions and answers with the author.

Synopsis

The Other Hand, also known as Little Bee, is a 2008 novel by British author Chris Cleave. It is a dual narrative story about a Nigerian asylum-seeker and a British magazine editor, who meet during the oil conflict in the Niger Delta, and are re-united in England several years later. Cleave, inspired as a university student by his temporary employment in an asylum detention centre, wrote the book in an attempt to humanise the plight of asylum-seekers in Britain.

Reviews

On Aug 25 2014, a reader said:
This is a very well written story about a young African refugee who finds her way to England. Her past experiences, and her current perception and experience of the English make for a poignant narrative of struggle and resolution.
On Oct 6 2010, Ccqdesigns said:
The most powerful book I have read in a long time. I recommend it to everyone. The unusual rhythm to the writing is perfect, creative, insightful and the book touched my heart in ways I never expected.
