New York: E. P. Dutton & Co; Duenewald Printing Co. Very Good with no dust jacket 1943. First Edition. Hardcover. Bright copy of this excellent, collectible animated book. Color illustratio ns/animations by Julian Wehr. This is a first edition with 7 animations that are animated by moving a paper tab back and forth (I understand that other later books of this one have fewer animations). Absolutely adorable! All of the tabs work and all of the pieces move, although two aren't "good as new". All pages are attached well to the red spiral binding. Nothing is scribbled on; no water marks. The tabs have surface soil/wear but each functions ok. Please note each animation and their condition: Animation 1 (Sambo with umbrella) - one leg is missing; the leg that is there has had some obvious repair. Animation 2 (Sambo giving jacket to tiger) - perfect. Animation 3 (Sambo giving pants to tiger) - perfect. Animation 4 (Tiger grabbing for Sambo) - perfect. Animation 5 (Tiger opening umbrella) - one side of umbrella doesn't open properly & Tiger's neck is tearing at the joint. Animation 6 (Tigers fighting) - perfect. Animation 7 (Jumbo, Mumbo, and Sambo eating pancakes) - perfect. Inscribed neatly in pen on Christmas 1943 on inside front cover. Edges rubbed, esp. Corners & spine with some chipping. Slight soiling. Slight yellowing. Sound binding. ; 8vo 8" - 9" tall; 24 pages .

GIBSON, Eva Katharine. Zauberlinda The Wise Witch. Chicago: Robert Smith Printing Co [1901]. 8vo, 258pp. Blue cloth pictorially stamped in yellow and orange. Pictorial endpapers with fixed sheets printed with an orange background; illustrations in one-color on every page with text in black. Light rubbing to spine ends and lower corners, covers slightly so, spine lightly sunned, a few pages slightly soiled in margins, else an unusually clean, tight copy.
First edition. A very early Oz imitation, being released just a year after the publication of Baum's The Wonderful Wizard of Oz (which had been the best-selling children's book of 1900). The book features a style imitating the format of the first Oz novel, with line drawings printed in a variety of colors appearing over and around the text of the novel, just as in The Wizard. Gibson's tale is also very reminiscent of Baum's, telling of an isolated little girl on the prairie who is transported into a realm of magic and danger, only to have to find her… Read More

Classic and very hard to find children's book, the third featuring the delightful little characters of Mr Nip (who resembles a mouse) and Mr Tuck (who looks a bit like a teddy bear and a bit like a cat). In this book, the charming illustrations are by W. C. Nims but are based (with her consent) on the original figures drawn by Lois Lenski. The Story of Little Black Sambo was first published in 1899 as part of the Dumpy Books for Children from the publisher Grant Richards. Spiral-bound pages in original color-illustrated pictorial boards. . 6 x 8 in. . With seven full-page color illustrations by Wehr, each with movable, tab-activated elements. This copy has all seven movables (in contrast to later editions with fewer). A fine copy, scarce in this condition. Helen Bannerman (1862 – 1946) wrote The Story of Little Black Sambo in 1898 to entertain her daughters while traveling in India, where the family lived for thirty years while Bannerman's husband worked in the Indian Medical Service. The original Sambo story portrayed its protagonist as a South Indian boy, and Bannerman's follow-up books (including Little Black Mingo) also reference the landscape of the Indian subcontinent (Jeyathurai).
