About This Item

Chicago: Albert Whitman. An extremely scarce version of the story about a little boy, his new clothes, some tigers and how the boy outwits them! 63 pages w/multi-color illustrations on most pages, multi-image end papers and a bright color pictorial label by Shinn who was best known as a postcard artist but illustration several books for this publisher. The style of the artwork echoes Bannerman's own illustrations. Medium blue covers have dulled gilt lettering and a border around the pasted-on label. Top of the front & rear boards are a little sun faded, as well as the spine and about 1" from the spine on the rear. Rear also has a few lightly faded spots that appear to be moisture. Overall a very good copy of this rarity. OUT OF PRINT. . Very Good. Hardcover. ca 1920S. 1920.

Synopsis

The Story of Little Black Sambo, a children's book by Helen Bannerman, a Scot who lived for 30 years in Madras in southern India, was first published in London in 1899. (An American edition of the book was illustrated by Florence White Williams. ) In the tale, an Indian boy named Sambo prevails over a group of hungry tigers. The little boy has to give his colourful new clothes, shoes, and umbrella to four tigers so they will not eat him.

Reviews

On Jan 14 2015, a reader said:
When I was a young I thought this was a great book. I never considered this book racist. But back then I didn't know what racism was. Sambo could have pink with yellow polka dots I would never have known the difference. Only when the grown ups made it racist did this ever enter my mind.
