Boston: Houghton Mifflin Company, 1942. First Edition. About Fine/Near Fine. First edition, first printing with 1942 listed on the title page. About Fine with faint stain to rear cover, small bookseller ticket to front free endpaper, else a very sharp and bright copy, in a correct first printing dust jacket, Near Fine, unclipped, with edge wear, a medium-sized chip to the bottom edge of the rear panel, light staining and several tape repairs made to the blindside. A lovely copy of this scarce Caldecott winner.

Reviews
On Sep 24 2010, Respessbooks said:
I have loved this book since my own childhood. Its story develops themes of urban sprawl and its impact, on beneficial aspects of rural life, and on family commitment to choosing and working for what amounts to preserving traditions that protect open space, farms, homes, and health. But the story never loses its small-view perspective, readily available to a child's eye and sensibility, presented in simple, charming illustrations. It was a worthy Caldecott winner (1943).
