From the personal library of Franklin and Eleanor Roosevelt, the Little Picture Bible and New Testament by Isabella Child, signed by Eleanor Roosevelt.. Miniature book (3" x 2.5"), 191pp, [1p ads]; [1]-191pp, [1p ads]. Green cloth, title on spine in gilt, spine recased with cloth laid down. Two volumes bound together in this publication. Frontispiece portrait with tissue cover, numerous full page illustrations. Bookplate on front endpaper from "Library of Franklin D. Roosevelt, No. 1373." Signed by Eleanor Roosevelt on front free endpaper, with her initials and FDR. She initialed numerous copies for provenance before the 1951 Hammer Galleries Auction. President Franklin Roosevelt was an avid collector of miniature books, a hobby which began in the 1920s and continued throughout his presidency. A complete list of his collection does not exist, since the books were located at the White House, Hyde Park and Campobello Island. After his death in 1945, his collection was divided up between members of the family and the National Park Service at Hyde Park. The first part of the collection was sold at auction in 1951 by Hammer Galleries of New York. At the estate sale for Eleanor Roosevelt in 1964, additional miniature books were sold at auction. Contemporary full red grained morocco, spine with gilt rules, lettering and embellishment. Boards with double gilt border rules, foliar and floral embellishment, edge tooling, inner foliar curlicues. All edges gilt, (gilding a little faded in places), green silk ribbon bookmark. Small area of surface loss to lower board (see photo). Corner tips lightly rubbed. Occasional light spotting, mainly to free endpapers. Text and plates crisp and bright.
Guy Toussaint Julien Carron (1760-1821) born in Rennes. Educator, writer and philanthropist who founded a number of social and educational institutions: schools, libraries and pharmacies while in exile in England. Deported to Jersey (1792-1796), on the Bourbon Restoration in 1814, Carron returned to France and became head of the Institut de Marie - Thérèse.

The illustrations were "painted" on the computer from a collection of antique playing cards. Poker chip on front cover, facsimile of $1000 bill on back cover. The felt covered boards with silk screened symbols, handmade paper end papers and binding were done at Waterleaf Mill & Bindery by Patrice Baldwin and staff. Signed and numbered. These pithy observations of a professional dealer range from comments by the players on life, poker and other players to commentary on the philosophy of poker.
