About This Item

The First UK printing published by Oxford University Press, London in 1936 with the correct sequence 'London, New York, Toronto' to the title page. The BOOK is in Very Good condition. Some pushing and rubbing at the spine ends, corners, edges and folds. The binding remains tight and the pictorial cover design to the front panel remains bright. Internally light offsetting and spotting to the prelims. The page edges are toned and there is the occasional light mark and spotting to the edges in places. A small stain to the upper front corner which is present on all of the page upper corners but remains unobtrusive. Free from inscriptions and erasures. The fragile WRAPPER is complete and is in Very Good- condition with chips, closed tears, rubbing and creasing in places - see images. It is the correct first issue with blank flaps and no reviews. Some toning to the edges of the flap folds and spine. The wrapper comes together and presents well in the removable Brodart archival cover. Loosely inserted is a H/W letter from the person identifying themselves as the model for the character 'Tim' ; 'I can confirm that I am the small boy in the red polo jersey in Edward Ardizzone's 'Tim and the brave sea captain'. My father was a well known artist in the 1930's and a friend of Edward Ardizzone. When I sat as a model I was wearing the red jersey which was the school uniform for Arnold House School, London Road, Maida Vale, London.'. There is also a first UK issue wrappered edition of this title dating from 1944. This book is in very Good++ condition with no inscriptions. Some rubbing and creasing to the edges, spine and corners. This was Edward Ardizzone's first major work for children and the first title in the acclaimed 'Little Tim' series. Striking colour lithographs by Ardizzone throughout. The book was produced in large format and printed on one side of the paper only. This may have been due to the particularly humid summer in New York, where the book was printed, causing problems for the drying time for the printing inks - or possibly that the large book felt too thin if the pages were to be printed on both sides. A very scarce title with the wrapper. Collectible. More images available on request. Ashton Rare Books welcomes direct contact.
