A two-volume set of Doctor Johnson's biographical sketches made of the principal English Poets. Originally published under the title "Lives of the Most Eminent English Poets" in 1779 through 1781. Volume 1 covers poets Abraham Cowley (1618-1667) through Matthew Prior (1664-1721), v. 2 William Congreve (1670-1728/29) to Thomas Gray (1716-1771). With an introduction by Mrs. L. Archer-Hind. --- In Everyman's Library binding style 3 with full rose cloth and gilt-stamped spine titling; blindstamped Eric Ravilious-designed 'shell' to covers and brown topstain. Volumes lack the dust jackets. --- A clean, tightly-bound set, unmarked except for prior owner's signatures to front paste-downs and sunned spine to volume 2.; 16mo 6" - 7" tall; xviii, 395, vii, 392 pages .
