About This Item
London: A. Strahan, printer. Nichols and Son, printer. H. Baldwin, J. Johnson, G. G. and J. Robinson, etc. etc., 1800 and 1801. Full Calf. Very Good. 12mo. 18 by 11 cm. vii, [1], 298, v, [1], 287, [4], 284, [4], 322, [2] pp. Complete four volume edition, with frontis portrait in first volume. Attractive full tree calf binding. All volumes with an inscription, dated 1805, on a prelim blank leaf. Inscription in a neat, and very attractive, cursive. This is a curious set, as volumes 3 and 4 were printed by A. Strahan in 1800 and the first two volumes, by Nichols, in 1801. Thus it is technically a mixed set, but other than this information, evident on the title page, it is an entirely cohesive set, with the leather bindings and other aspects matching perfectly among all the volumes. Condition: lacking sciver title label and vol. number label, first volume, and lacking vol. number label, 2nd and a small chip of this on the 3rd vols., but in all cases shadow (or blindstamping) of printing visible. First volume rubbed along joints, with other volumes, some light rubbing evident. All boards, though, remain fresh and healthy. Light edgewear. Leaves within with occasional light fox marks, etc., but overall come off as clean. A handsome set.
