The covers are very clean, tight and straight and are not the original. Clean off-white replacement end papers. Tanned cut edges. The text block is original from publisher; a little worn; tightly bound; some pages slightly wrinkled; sporadic foxing. Very good condition. No annotations or dedications. Without jacket.

There is a damp stain on the front and rear boards and the edges of pages. No interruption of the text. Pages 450 and 451 show fading; the result of a piece of paper being left in the book. There is light foxing throughout. Gifted 1882 on the first free page back. The "Chandos Classics". 588 pages.
