Top edge of text block foxed. Endpapers toned; pages crisp. Dust jacket rubbed; some edgewear; rear panel appears streaked; spine somewhat darkened and scuffed and having an "x" in red pencil; not price clipped ($4.00). DJ in clear archival sleeve. 18 illustrations including frontis portrait on 16 plates. 183 pp. 9.75 x 7 inches. Being the record of adventures by sea and shore to the California gold-fields and the Pacific Northwest, 1849-1854. Illustrated from original sketches by the author. Edited from original manuscripts by Carolyn Hale Russ, the daughter of Richard Hale. Covers adventures of the 159 day voyage from Newburyport, Massachusetts to San Francisco aboard the General Worth (Nov 1849 to May 1850), including a stop at Juan Fernandez--the Robonson Crusoe island; the San Francisco of 1850 as well as the fire of 1851 and the following plague; a year working in Portland; and travels sailing south and observations of Callao in Peru and the Chincha Islands with its slave and guano industry. All in all, the log covers a four year time span. Jacket is worn at the edges and spine, with several small chips and tears, most notably with some small pieces missing at the top of the spine. There is also a length along the front spine edge that has a thin tear several inches long, with another of similar descript on the front flap hinge. Otherwise, the jacket is soiled and age-toned, but in good condition. Book itself shows only some mild shelf-wear. Interior is clean, bright and free of stray markings. Overall, this is a very good copy with a good dust jacket.

A common book in the regular edition, but this is the first time we have encountered a copy from the edition limited to 155 copies, printed on deckle-edge paper and signed by the author.
