Signed by poet under his name on title page and dated 21/xii/74. Then printed by poet, "For G....C... from his low-life lyricist. An anti-war / pacifist poem. Single sheet broadside. "Printed on the Fourth of July, 1935, in an edition of 75 copies, by Vrest Orton, in Weston, Vermont." 15.5 x 11 inches. Medium-weight, tan paper, watermarked ARAK / W&A. VG with some creasing and light spotting. Scarce. WorldCat locates just two copies, both at Brown University. [Abraham] B. Shriffin (1902-1998), was a Russian-born American bookseller and author whose varied work included the bookselling novel, Mr. Pirate: A Romance. Shiffrin operated the Academy Bookshop in midtown Manhattan and was involved (but not charged) in an effort to fence Al Aaraaf, Edgar Allan Poe's rare second book, after it was stolen in 1931 from the New York Public Library. [Kenneth] Vrest Orton (1896-1986) worked for H.L. Mencken's American Mercury, Alfred A. Rare original poetry book with cloth covered boards, copyright 1880 by J. W. Shoemaker & Co. This edition published in 1906 by the Penn Publishing company, Philadelphia. From the estate of my great-great grandfather.Includes many unique poems and recitations such as "To a skull", "Uncle Daniel's Introduction to a Mississippi Steamer", "The Leak in the Dyke", etc. More well-known poetry includes "Song of Birds", "Old Ironsides", and "Bannock Burn" by Robbie Burns. Light rubbing and bumps to outside spine edges. Back cover and interior cloth covered board has a stain at top. Original owner's name and address from 1908, but no other writing or marks. First 2 pages have a stain at top, but text of 192 pages of poetry and recitations is totally clean with light tanning of pages.
