New York: Grosset & Dunlap, 1928. First edition. Hardcover. fine. First edition, a novelization of the lost 1927 Tod Browning silent film starring Lon Chaney. Novelization writen by Marie Coolidge Rask. Hardcover in olive green cloth lettered in black. 261 pp. plus publisher's ads at rear. Illustrated with photographic stills from the film. A tight, fine, bright example, "London After Midnight" may well be the most famous lost film of the silent era; it starred the "Man of 1000 faces" Lon Chaney, Sr. who, in his scariest make-up after his "Phantom Of the Opera", portrayed a vampire type creature but who was really a detective. Along with a cadaverous Dracula's-bride looking woman in a long white gown, he investigates a five year old murder on the outskirts of London. The last known surviving print of the film was destroyed in an MGM vault fire in 1965; in 2002 Turner Classic Movies produced a recreation using existing still photos from the original. One of the most sought after of all Photoplay editions.
