About This Item

Paris: Gallimard, 1961. First Edition. First Edition. SIGNED and briefly inscribed by René Clair in manuscript ink on the front endpaper. Photoplay edition, with stills from the film, and released in a dust jacket featuring a still of Bourvil on the front. Top edges uncut.

Basis for the 1961 eponymous film, directed by Clair, starring Bourvil, Alfred Adam, Philippe Noiret, and Claude Rich. The film echoes director's Clair's early silent films, interweaving separate themes of comedy and fantasy, involving a well with supernatural powers that lengthens life expectancy.
