About This Item

London: Faber and Faber, 1954. First edition of Golding's first book, one of the best-known works in modern literature. Octavo, original cloth. Signed by William Golding on the title page. Near fine in a near fine dust jacket with a small closed tear to the rear panel. Jacket design by Anthony Gross. Housed in a custom half morocco clamshell box. An exceptional example, most rare and desirable signed. "A collection of modern fiction would never be complete without it" (Connolly, 136). Originally published in 1954, The Lord of the Flies was named to Modern Library’s 100 Greatest Novels List of the twentieth century. "[T]his brilliant work is a frightening parody on man's return (in a few weeks) to that state of darkness from which it took him thousands of years to emerge. Fully to succeed, a fantasy must approach very close to reality. Lord of the Flies does. It must also be superbly written. It is" (The New York Times Book Review). It has been adapted to film twice, in 1963 by Peter Brook and again 1990 by Harry Hook.

Synopsis

Beloved (1987) is a Pulitzer Prize-winning novel by Toni Morrison. The novel is based on the life and legal case of the slave Margaret Garner. The slavery of the American south is bared in this transfixing tale.  Sethe was born a slave, and escaped to Ohio, but the past follows where the authorities do not.  She is haunted by the memories of the beautiful place where she experienced so many terrible things, and haunted by the ghost of her baby daughter - her Beloved.

On Feb 18 2014, a reader said:
It isn't an easy read. It is often a beautiful read...but beauty and heartbreak are so close together. The lives of the characters have been so difficult, but Toni Morrison tells their stories with incredible depth and empathy. I've only read Beloved once, and I plan to do it again - this is one book that will keep giving on each read.
