'Lorna Doone' is a historical romance novel, set in Exmoor in the late seventeenth century. The novel follows the farmer John, whose father was brutally murdered. John grows up to become a respectable farmer, falling in love with Lorna, who is destined to marry Carver Doone against her will. Written By Richard Blackmore. Blackmore is often referred to as the 'Last Victorian', being a pioneer in fiction writing of his time, writing vivid descriptions of the countryside. Though his work was enjoyed during his lifetime, most of his work now, besides 'Lorna Doone', has gone out of print. His other works include 'Clara Vaughan', 'Alice Lorraine, 'The Maid of Sker', 'Christowell', and more. Illustrated with a colour frontispiece, and fifteen plates. Illustrated by Charles E. Brittan and Charles E. Brock. Undated, dated from Copac from a copy held at Reading University. Collated, incomplete, as lacking plate 'Lorna Doone', which is stated as being to the front of cover. Pages are bright with spotting to the first and last few pages, with just the odd spots otherwise. Very Good
