About This Item

London: William Heinemann, 1907. Hardcover. First Edition, First Impression. 5 x 7.75in. x. 316pp. Publisher's cloth boards with orange lettering and "Gothic Dawn" decoration. Signed and inscribed by the author to her husband, in the year of their marriage, on the first blank endpaper: "For my darling Choodle with best love from Choodie. January 25th 1907." The presentation to Hubert Stuart Moore, in the clear hand of Underhill, is dated prior to the official date of publication. The major holding of letters by and pertaining to Underhill, at King's College London, bear mention of the "Choodle/Choodie" pet names used between the author and her husband in their early courtship. A revealing copy, allowing a small glimpse into the relationship that would most hinder Underhill's burgeoning vocation as one of the greatest of all spiritual writers [Armstrong, 20-94]. VERY GOOD. Shows some minor shelf rubbing of the extremities, the front inner hinge with slight perforation of the surface paper only, a suggestion of toning at the endpapers, otherwise the binding is strong and tight, the text is clean and unmarked, and the boards remain bright and distinct. As pictured.
