About This Item

London: Richard Bentley and Son, 1886. Later edition from 1886, this title first published in 1847. Sumptuously bound copy of this three volume set, illustrated with engravings. Full morocco in a deep French blue, covers uniformly patterned with fleur de lis, eagle and wreath devices in the corners, gilt spine lettering, raised spine bands, compartments double ruled and decorated with fleur de lis, all edges gilt, gilt tooled inner dentelles with gold brocade patterned endleaves, possibly silk, bindings signed by Zaehnsdorf, 491 + 487 + 495 pages. Some wear to the spines, with rubbing to the joints (but covers firmly attached), rubbing to the spine ends (a little bit of light chipping to the spine head of volume II), a small vertical surface split to the top compartment of volume III, spines a little dulled from the residue of what appears to be some old wax. Gilt on covers and edges very bright. Internally very clean with no names or other markings, text blocks sound with no loosened pages. A handsome set. . Hard Cover. Good. 8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" tall.
