About This Item

Bright, crisp, clean, glossy laminated,wrap-around custard yellow paper-covered boards with colour pictorial artwork illustration,by Mabel Lucie Attwell, with capitalised blue-lettered author's name and capitalised red-lettered title to front board, blueoutlined lettering to a ubiquitously but slightly sunned/faded spine/backstrip,rear board with blue+black lettering; all with negligible shelf-wear,bumping and creasing to edges and corners - no nicks or tears present.|Front top+bottom corners minisculely bumped and some minor indentation to front board too.Top+fore-edges generally bright and clean with some minimal, sporadic spotting/foxing; contents bright, tight, clean - virtually pristine - no dog-ear reading creases to any pages' corner tips, would appear unread - apart from my own collation.Bright, crisp, clean, generally sharp -cornered,pictorial illustrated boards and clean b/w illustrated pastedowns and free endpapers.UK,8vo HB,1st edn,7-125pp [paginated] includes a mixture of stories and poems - 39 in total, each accompanied by either an illustration or illustrations, profuse colour illustrations by Mabel Lucie Attwell throughout the text and the book, plus [unpaginated] black ink printed
'This Book Belongs to' (unused) bookplate to front free endpaper - which has a few foxing+ gubbing spots,b/w vignette illustrated separator title page with a colour pictorial frntis to it's verso,a b/w line illustrated title page,a b/w vignette illustrated contents list/table.
Visually the exterior appearance is exceptional, and even internally, the book is also in an exceptional condition/state of preservation and presentation for a book of it's age and nature, i.e. a child's ephemeral book. It is only the exterior faults described that prevents a slightly higher grading.Despite them,it really still is an exceptional copy for its cleanliness and brightness.
A bedtime collection of specially written stories and poems, traditional nursery rhymes and original Mabel Lucie Attwell stories, all accompanied by her classic illustrations.
Mabel Lucie Attwell (1879-1964.)Born Mile End, London, the ninth of ten children of a butcher. Studied at Regent School of Art and at Heatherley's School of Art,but, disliking the formal training, completed neither course.Married Harold Earnshaw (1908) and he is thought to have been responsible for some of the more naturalistic parts of her drawings, such as the animals.Fom 1911 until the end of her life she designed postcards for Valentines of Dundee. Following the success of a card depicting two children peering over the end of a bed at a mouse (entitled 'What's the good of a perfect day if you can't spend a perfect night') she developed a line in pictures of chubby children in situations with adult overtones and (possibly unconscious) suggestions of double entendre.A rapid and prolific worker, she also designed advertisements, posters, calendars, figurines and wall plaques and contributed to annuals and gift books. Some of her earlier books such as 'Peter Pan' and 'The Water Babies' were delicate and appealing but as she becme a household name her drawing became increasingly stereotyped. She workd mainly in pen and ink and watercolour. Member SWA.She died at Fowey in Cornwall, where she had lived for many years.
