About This Item

Broadcast Books, 1990 4to (25.5 cm), 176 pp. Publisher's cloth and dust jacket. This book is based on the BBC World Service series of the same title broadcast around the world in 26 episodes, Autumn 1990-Spring 1991. It features a gallery of great scientists, engineers, inventors and thinkers who contributed massively to the development of the world we live in today, introducing the reader to four centuries of scientific achievement from Sir Francis Bacon (17th c.) to Robert Oppenheimer (20th c.), via Newton Darwin, Einstein and others. The stories of their breakthroughs in science, mathematics and engineering are adapted from the broadcasts of John Hamilton who has set the scientists in their historical context, and brings to life their struggle and the significance of their achievements.
