First Edition. Hardcover. Original black leather elaborately stamped in blind and in gilt on boards and spine (binding stamped Bancroft, Broadway at lower edge of design on front and rear boards). All edges gilt. Contains 11 of 13 engravings. The second in this series of gift books containing short fiction, illustrations, and poetry by many authors and illustrators. Contains two works by Washington Irving, The Widows Ordeal and Creole Village (BAL 10149) and three by William Gilmore Simms, Conrade Weickhoff, My Sister, and The War-Eagle of the Dismal Swamp (BAL 18058). Other contributors include Henry William Herbert, J. G. Chapman, J. E. F. Prudhomme, Grenville Mellen, John Inman, and Theodore S. Fay. BAL 8059; 12mo 7" - 7½" tall; 353 pages .
