Smith was forbidden by his father to use the name Smith, taking his grandfather's name (Edmund Ware) until he had x-number of Saturday Evening Post and several book publications under his belt. He wrote over 600 short stories (fact and fiction) combined into 9 books about hunting and fishing in the Maine woods (and one early novel: Rider in The Sun 1935)..
