About This Item

(London: Sampson, Low, Marston & Co. / Cape Town: T. Maskew Miller, [1911?]). 8vo; original blue cloth, lettered in gilt on spine and upper cover; pp. 317 + (iii) + 12. Cloth rather worn and stippled; earlier owner's name signed on front free endpaper; rather foxed throughout. Fair to good. "To the memory of the brave men of two nations, once enemies, now friends." The book's dedication seems sincerely meant: The Hon. George Glaser Munnik (1846-1935) "became legal and mining commissioner in the Transvaal Republic. Served on commando in the Anglo-Boer War, taken prisoner in 1901 and sent to India. Entered politics after his return, became a senator on the establishment of Union in 1910. A talented writer with a light touch and sense of humour, Munnik wrote articles and autobiographical works as well as novels. His Major Greville, V.C.: A Tale of the Great Boer War (1911) was written while he was in India, and was based on a real person - an English soldier he had come to know." - Adey, et al: Companion to South African English Literature, p. 142 .
