Alejandro Malaspina (1754-1810), was an Italian navigator and as a captain in the Spanish Navy led a scientific expedition (1789-94), that included a mission to explore the Pacific Coast and to detriment whether there was a Strait of Anian, or Northwest Passage to Asia. .

Alejandro Malaspina's expedition was scientific in nature and the September, 1791 visit to California resulted in one of the earliest and best descriptions of the province's settlements. John Green, a member of the crew, was the first American known to have landed in California. During this trip they stopped for a two week period in Monterey, California to explore and document what they found.
