About This Item

London: John Murray [through 1966], 1958. First Edition. Hardcover. Near Fine/Near Fine. Two First Impressions of "two of the best travel books of the century." (Financial Times) Octavos in correct pictorial dust jackets by John Craxton. Mani: xiii,[5],320pp, with frontispiece and title-page vignette by Craxton, map of the southern Peloponnese by John Woodcock, and 26 photographs by Joan Eyres Monsell (the author's wife); Mani: Publisher's scarlet cloth, spine and upper cover stamped gilt, price-clipped (rather aggressively, catching just the corner of the final letter of the photographer's name). Near Fine, pages clean and binding secure, neatly erased name from front fly leaf, two corners lightly bumped; Near Fine jacket, spine panel very gently faded and top tip lightly rubbed. Roumeli: viii,248pp, with inserted double-page map of northern Greece on heavy grey stock by Craxton and 20 photographs by Monsell. Publisher's French blue cloth, spine and upper cover stamped gilt, dust jacket priced 30s. Near Fine or better (spine-tip cloth sunned, name neatly inked on front fly leaf ), very lightly read, gilt bright; Near Fine jacket (spine panel moderately tanned, tips lightly rubbed and nicked), front panel still bright and vibrant. All in all, an attractive set. During the Second World War, Leigh Fermor was stationed in Albania, Greece, and occupied Crete, where, disguised as a shepherd in the mountains, he helped organize the resistance. After the War he traveled in the West Indies and then settled in Greece. Mani, an exploration of that country's southernmost promontory, one of the most isolated regions of the world, is considered by some his finest book. ("Almost every page has its own literary tour de force, often with intimidating displays of learning and research mixed with fantasy, imagination and acute descriptions of the scene itself." Robin Hanbury-Tenison, Geographical: 76; pp. 42-49). It was followed by a sequel, Roumeli (the ancient name for the lands from the Bosphorus to the Adriatic and from Macedonia to the Gulf of Corinth) explores Northern Greece and its minority communities, taking the reader among Sarakatsan shepherds, the monasteries of Meteora and the villages of Krakora, among itinerant peddlers and beggars. Leigh Fermor was widely regarded as Britain's greatest travel writer during his lifetime, and he was once described as "a cross between Indiana Jones, James Bond and Graham Greene." N. B. With few exceptions (always identified), we only stock books in exceptional condition, with dust jackets carefully preserved in archival, removable polypropylene sleeves. All orders are packaged with care and posted promptly. Satisfaction guaranteed.
