Two volumes, large 8vo (10 x 6.25 inches). 400 color plates and 3 maps. Publisher's brown cloth gilt (rebacked preserving original spine panels). The 1892 reprint from the 1841 sheets of Catlin's important narrative of his travels in the Mississippi and Missouri Valleys and the eastern slope of the Rocky Mountains during his eight years' journey.

Top edge gilt. , Notes: A scarce copy with plates 113 and 114 present. This copy does not contain the errata slip. Catlin began his journey in 1830 when he accompanied General William Clark on a diplomatic mission up the Mississippi River into Native American territory. St. Louis became Catlin’s base of operations for five trips he took between 1830 and 1836, eventually visiting fifty tribes. Two years later he ascended the Missouri River more than 3000 km to Fort Union Trading Post, near what is now the North Dakota-Montana border, where he spent several weeks among indigenous people who were still relatively untouched by European civilization.
