Richmond Virginia: Ayers & Wade, 1863. old marbled paper, held at spine with half cloth binder's tape. Very good. n. 12 mo. (7 x 4 1/2 inches) 298 + (1) pages, 30 lithographed black and white plates, original cloth-backed marbled wrappers, a few leaves browned "This was the standard manual for Confederate surgeons. Chisolm was a leading southern physician and served for a time as chief surgeon of the military hospital at Richmond. Crandall lists Richmond editions of 1861 and 1862 with no plates, an 1861 Charleston edition with no plates, and an 1864 Columbia, S. C. edition with only 26 plates." There are eight plates, in this edition, illustrating the arteries, fourteen plates illustrating amputation, and eight plates illustrating resection.

(5) 59 + (6) pages printed in Japanese and English on hand made Japanese vellum, with 26 individual fabric samples (25 are tipped in, the 26th sample is the cover material for the hardcover binding), plus a wood block print illustrating a woman in Japanese wardrobe working at a hand loom. Number 180 of a limited edition of 200. Housed in an ink blue stiff folder with bone ties. At the bottom of each page is a description of the sample, its pattern, its weave, and its dye; in addition to a small woodblock illustration of the plant from which the fabric is derived. Very good condition.

Hamilton was a "Southern Union man." He opposed secession, and slavery; he eventually became Governor of Texas.His letter to Lincoln, dated July 28, 1863 shortly after Gettysburg, supports the Emancipation Proclamation. He proclaims slavery an enemy of the nation, and states that former slaves are " ... capable of being made allies in the common cause of freedom, justice, and humanity."

There are thiry-one letters are that supposedly give insight into secret diplomatic transactions between the English and French courts. "History of the Stuarts," is a perceptive contemporaneous account.
