About This Item

London: John Henry and James Parker, 1862. Wraps. Very Good. O. Jewitt. O. Jewitt. [2-a double page illustration], 62, [2-ads] pages. 11 x 13.5 cm. Printed wrappers in brown and red. Paper spine noting "Gothic Surface Ornament" in red. Minor wear, spine with just minor separation at bottom, some soiling/rubbing to wrappers. A scarce survival given the format and subject. Wraps. Front wrapper notes "Series of Manuals, No. 3." at top. "A Manual of GOTHIC Surface Ornament. Oxford and London: James Parker & Co." on the balance of the page. Rear wrapper is blank. Published under the authority of the Department of Science and Art. Dating this item is not straightforward, as widely variant dates confirm in Worldcat. We've dated it to before 1862 as the advertisements in rear note the fifth edition of Rickman's Gothic Architecture as available, and OCLC records confirm the fifth edition as 1848, and the sixth edition as 1862. There was also an edition that included the first three in this series published in 1900. Further work on the advertisements may yield a smaller date range.

Scarce, with less than a dozen copies in Worldcat of any printing as of this writing. Beautiful wood engraving illustrations with excellent detail especially given the small format of this pamphlet. Many illustrations are signed "O. Jewitt", probably the famous engraver Orlando Jewitt who was active in this period.
