United Kingdom, Denmark, March 1907 - July 1908. Manuscript midshipman's journal spanning fifteen months and involving two pre-dreadnought battleships of the Royal Navy Home Fleet, made by W.S.F. Macleod whose detailed logs are profuse, drawings numerous and impeccable, and daily entries center on naval duties and armament. 8vo. 164 pages, plus 25 manuscript drawings tipped-in. Brown cloth over marbled boards. Original bookbinder's label to front pastedown (Knight & Co., Fleet Street, London). Volume measures approximately 21 x 32 cm. Wear to boards, otherwise in very good condition, internally crisp and clean, a pleasing and beautifully illustrated volume. It is no surprise, with a volume as meticulous as this, that Macleod enjoyed naval work and continued a long career at sea. With the rank of Captain, W.S.F. Macleod, R.N., O.B.E., transferred to the Australian Navy in 1933 as Commanding Officer of the heavy cruiser HMAS Australia. He was attached to this ship for two years, from March or April 1933 until at least end of February 1935 when it was flying the standard of H.R.H. the Duke of Gloucester. Further research is warranted to learn more of his naval appointments. Superlative manuscript drawings of naval instrumentation, armament, ship plans showing every deck, mine fields, naval yard plans and nautical maps, together with a highly detailed daily log of exercises and tasks, this volume provides a most pleasing and thorough illustrated record of the British Empire's leading turn-of-the-century marine training program.. Manuscript.
