Jefferson published this map and guide to appeal to gold seekers, and included much practical advice regarding party size, wagons, types of animals, provisions, etc. He wrote "side saddles should be discarded - women should wear hunting-frocks, loose pantaloons, men's hats and shoes, and ride the same as men", warning his readers that "the journey is not entirely a pleasure trip" (N.B., from Kurutz). ***DESCRIPTION: Bound in red cloth, front pastedown a facsimile of pastedown on the original map case, red cloth pocket on the rear pastedown for the folding maps; octavo size (approximately 8" tall), pagination: (i-ii) being the title and copyright pages, i-xi being the Introduction, blank (xii), 1-23, Notes (24-25), colophon page (26). Four folding maps printed on a very thin yet strong paper, black ink. The four-page prospectus provides information about the publication including its original price of $6.00, plus 2.5% sales tax in California. ***CONDITION: Volume is near fine, the binding is deep in colour (not sunned), the front pastedown is crisp (no rubbing or edgewear) with only a very light, stray red mark, the volume has a strong, square text block, most (if not all) of the signatures are unopened, solid hinges, straight corners with a minimum of rubbing, the interior is clean and bright, and it is entirely free of prior owner markings; a hint of bumping /rubbing to the head and tail of the spine, else fine. The four folding maps are fine overall and appear never to have been opened; one has a shallow crease along one side, a second has some off-setting from the rear free endpaper along one-half of a folded side. The prospectus is near fine, with several shallow creases but clean and whole, with no edgewear, tears or chips; there is a small rectangle of offsetting to the fourth (blank) page. ***CITATION: Wright-Howes J68, Kurutz 359b. ***POSTAGE: International customers, please note that additional postage may apply as the standard does not always cover costs; please contact us for details. ***Swan's Fine Books is pleased to be a member of the ABAA, ILAB and IOBA and we stand behind every book we sell.
