A fine and decorative map by one of America's most prolific cartographers of the 19th Century, Samuel Augustus Mitchell, (1792-1868). In contrast to his American colleagues who utilized lithography as a basic means of Atlas production, Scottish-born Mitchell engraved his maps in steel, in an effort to compete with the quality of the European cartographers of the mid-19th Century. The engraved process allowed for finer detail in both the charted territory and the elegantly embellished border which characterizes his decorative maps. As a result, Mitchell created as fine, yet affordable, an Atlas as any produced by the European cartographers of the period. (Schwartz and Ehrenberg. The Mapping of America. P. 273).
