by HONDIUS, Joducus (1563-1612) & MERCATOR, Gerardus (1512-1594)

Condition: Very Good

Amsterdam Map. Very Good. No Binding. Amsterdam, ca. 1620. Copper engraved original hand coloured map ca. 35,5x49 cm (14 x19 ½ in). Original centrefold, Latin text on verso. Light age toning, otherwise a very good map with ample margins. A very attractively hand coloured decorative map which includes vignettes of ships, sea monsters and indigenous people and an inset view of Cuzco the Inca capital. The Strait of Magellan is bordered in the South by Tierra Del Fuego, shown here as a part of a large southern continent and Eastern Brazil is shown as an island. Jodocus Hondius "was a Dutch engraver, and cartographer. He is best known for his early maps of the New World and Europe, for re-establishing the reputation of the work of Gerard Mercator, and for his portraits of Francis Drake. He helped establish Amsterdam as the center of cartography in Europe in the 17th century" (Wikipedia). Koeman I, 9800:1A; Tooley's Mapmakers E-J p.364-5..

Michael Bond - the man behind Paddington Bear

A lonely toy bear on an empty shop shelf on Christmas Eve in 1956 first captured the attention of Michael Bond, who kindly shared Paddington with the world.
