Publisher: John Bartlett. Large brown cloth boards measuring 8" x 5", gilt and blindstamped. Map measures 17" x 15", Illustration sheet measures 15" x 10". FC disbound, rear good with a bit of a cloth pull upper right corner. Map has a short tear by/from the central crease on left. Fold toning and occasional foxing, Good+ to VG. Etchings (by Wallis) from Champney drawings are edge toned as well, VG+ to near fine condition. A favorite of mine, the Franconia Lake scene, is quite lovely in its simplistic beauty with a small dingy and pair of sightseers. The Bond map with the Champney views is to be considered a cornerstone to any collection of such material. Contrary to Bent The five lithographed views after Champney (IN THIS EXAMPLE) are not printed on the reverse of the map but rather are on a separate sheet behind the Map. Both sheets are printed on thicker paper than is noted on the more common printing included in B. Willey's History (1856). In the past 30 years or so as a book dealer here in the White Mountains I have seen perhaps 8 examples of the larger two formats, this variation only one other time. Much easier to frame 2 sheets than to find 2 copies of this rarity References; Apt, Maps of the White Mountains of New Hampshire; Bent's Bibliography of the White Mountains; Cobb, Maps of New Hampshire to 1900; Historical New Hampshire Vol. 51, No's 3&4, 1996, (Beauty Caught and Kept: Benjamin Champney in the White Mountains.).

Description:
Publisher: John Bartlett. Large light brown cloth boards measuring 8" x 5", Gilt and blindstamped. The edges are uniformly sunned with light wear to the ends, remarkably nice condition for these covers which are commonly found disbound and/or in rough shape. Map and Illustration sheet measures 17" x 15". Map has a professionally mended tear along the central crease. Another short tear at the tip-in junction likely from a careless opening of the map. Otherwise map is near fine with none of the usual foxing and very little edge wear. Etchings (by Wallis) from Champney drawings are also in near fine condition. A favorite of mine, the Franconia Lake scene, is quite lovely in its simplistic beauty with a small dingy and pair of sightseers. The Bond map with the Champney views is to be considered a cornerstone to any collection of such material. As, according to Bent, The five lithographed views after Champney are printed on the reverse of the map. Map sheet is printed on thicker paper… Read More
