About This Item

2007. First Edition with full number line 8vo size hardcover with dust jacket; 418 pages plus two sections on glossy stock of black and white photographs and illustrations. Photos included are the well-known sequence of Switzer's then boyfriend preventing a Boston Marathon official removing her from the course during her 1967 run; these photos are also on both the front and back of the dust jacket. Black and white photos are also used as the section dividers in the text. From jacket: "In 1967, Kathrine Switzer was the first woman to register for and wear bib numbers in what was then the all-male Boston Marathon, infuriating one of the event's directors. He attacked her mid-race, trying to violently eject her. In what would become one of the all-time iconic images in sports, Switzer escaped from the director, with the help of her fellow runners, and finished the race. Not only was it a watershed moment for the sport, its also became a significant event in women's history - a force for social change and empowerment for women worldwide... (This book is Switzer's) personal story about how she overcame the odds - as well as public ridicule - to become one of the greatest marathon runners of her time, and an authority on women's sports and fitness." There is an inch tear to bottom of back cover near spine and a bump and tear to bottom of book in that area. . First. Hard Cover. Good/Good. 8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" tall.
