An early issue of one of the most influential socialist magazines in history, a radical co-operative publication founded in Greenwich Village that published some of the most important authors and artists of the time, seeking to champion socialist ideology and co-operatives until it was ultimately shut down after a lengthy showdown with the government in which they stood trial accused of trying to "unlawfully and willfully…obstruct the recruiting and enlistment of the United States [military]". This issue, as the title implies, focuses on the plight of the farmer. Includes contributions by Eleanor Wentworth, Rufus W. Weeks, Frederick Sumner Boyd, Rufus James Trimble, Hank Jellis, Eugene Wood, Emanuel Julius, Pete Vlag, Andre Tridon, Carl Heileman, Donald Wand, Robert Hamburg, Jonas Atwater, and Fritz Von Brachstein. Other illustrators include Anton Otto Fischer (frontispiece), Maurice Becker, and Arthur Young. Quarto. 18pp, illustrated, frontispiece. Stapled wraps printed in brown ink on brown paper, featuring a portrait of a farmer by Robert Robinson on the front and a large print of "The Destroyer" by Charles A. Winter on the rear. Near fine with small closed tear at bottom of hinge.

A translation, by the artist, of Toye and Adair's, Drinks: Long & Short, originally issued in London in 1925. Much more than a translation, this beautiful re-imagining of the book, by one of France's most prolific and imaginative printmakers. In a custom binding, unsigned, with an original drawing for the design of the binding used as an endpaper. The binding is quarter black morocco, gilt-titled and decorated with ornaments in the shape of bunches of grapes. Some light foxing throughout. Original pochoir Art-Deco wrappers bound-in. The owner of the book, W.P. Dudley of Chicago, was a fixture on the Palm Beach social circuit, arriving for the opening of The Breakers. His name is gilt-stamped on the front board. Throughout the book, Dudley has seen fit to comment in pencil, correcting recipes he views as errant, and criticizing or praising cocktails as he sees fit. Some of his commentary is detailed, and some… Read More
