Folio. 18pp, illustrated, frontispiece. Stapled wraps printed in blue ink on brown paper and featuring a portrait of an unnamed miner by Alexander Popini. Frontispiece features artwork by Robert Robinson: "The Boy in the Mine". The Masses was an important and inflential radical magazine that was published in Greenwich Village from 1911 to 1917 when it was forced to shut down after a lengthy showdown with the government in which they stood trial accused of trying to "unlawfully and willfully…obstruct the recruiting and enlistment of the United States [military]". Includes an early poem by Louis Untermeyer ("The Song of the Street") and contributions by Horatio Winslow, Emanuel Julius, Piet Vlag, Inez Haynes Gillmore, Ethel Lloyd Patterson, and Vera Lynn. Illustrators include Art Young, Robert Robinson, Layton Smith, William Washburn Nutting, Alice Reach Winter, Alexander Popini, and Anton Otto Fischer. Hinge reinforced with tape, chipping and fairly heavy creasing throughout. About Good.
