About This Item

This is the handmade book with the first publication of The Master and Margarita, magical novel by Mikhail Bulgakov (1891–1940), Russian writer and author of probably most popular Russian novel of XXth. The novel was published twenty seven years after Bulgakov's death for the first time. The edition was censored. They cut out whole paragraphs of text and inserted words from the editor. Both parts of the novel were published in the monthly periodical Moskva (#11, 1966; #1, 1967).
Introduction to the novel was written by the Konstantin Simonov, the famous Russian poet. Afterword was written by one of the first Bulgakov expert Abraham Vulis. The main role of the introduction and afterword was to convince the officials that the novel is not 'contra of soviet power' but 'about other things'. It was Abraham Vulis who contacted with the Bulgakov's widow Elena Sergeevna and persuaded her to print the novel. Although it was risky the chief editor Evgenii Popovkin agreed to publish this novel in the Moskva.
This book was compiled by Gennadii Astrov (1928- 2013), the novosiberian bibliophile. Astrov enriched original edition. There is article The M. Bulgakov novel The Master and Margarita by another Bulgakov expert Vladimir Lakshin (extract from Novyi mir #6, 1968), several extracts from newspapers, Bulgakov and his wife portrait from Literaturnaia Rossiia #6 (838), 1979), two articles about the editing of the novel: How the censor was saving The Master, or single chance to stay in the history by Aleksei Simonov (Ogonek #26 (3336), 1991) and His single chance (Literaturnaia gazeta #1-2 (5684), 1998), the Bulgakov expert Lidiia Ianovskaia's article We don't know our future (Nedelia #52 (1656), 1991)
