The Master Mariner, is an epic tale of the sea and seafaring from the sixteenth century to near the end of the twentieth. It began a projected two-part novel about an immortal mariner (Matthew Lawe). It is considered a masterpiece of historical fiction. Fourteen true maps, along with other diagrams are included as are real events and people such as: Drake and the Armada; Hudson and the North-West passage; Sir Henry Morgan; Samuel Pepys, Secretary to the Navy; Captain Cook, General Wolf, Sir John Franklin and the Arctic; fighting in both World Wars.
Monsarrat died before the second book was finished. His wife Anne Monsarrat completed the remainder of the story in Nicholas's own words, partly from some working notes he left and partly from his original synopsis of The Master Mariner Book II. It was published in 1980 as The Master Mariner, Book 2: Darken Ship: The Unfinished Novel.
