About This Item

New York and San Francisco: New Directions / San Francisco Review, 1962. First printing. 52 pp., 5.25 x 8 inches. Sewn signatures glued into printed card covers. Light edgewear and soiling to covers, very slight scattered foxing to endpapers and edges, otherwise very good. Inscribed on front endpaper by the author.

Oppen’s second book, nearly three decades after his first — breaking the long silence of his years as a political activist and subsequent self-imposed exile in Mexico. Copublished by his sister June Oppen Degnan (at the San Francisco Review), the book collected poems written after Oppen had returned to writing poetry in 1958. He would go on to win the Pulitzer Prize two books later, with the 1968 volume Of Being Numerous.

Uncommon signed.

About Passages Bookshop

Passages Bookshop stocks fine, rare, and unusual books and graphic art, with a concentration on modern and contemporary literature and art (particularly poetry and the avant-garde), artist's books, fine printing, and the book arts. The successor to New York City's Bridge Bookshop (late 1980s), Passages opened in Albuquerque in 1994 and relocated to Portland, Oregon, in 1997. In November of 2015 we moved to a new retail shop and gallery centrally located in Portland's east side, two blocks north of the convention center, where we are typically open Thursday through Saturday from 12:00 to 6:00 pm, as well as by appointment or chance.
