"One of the great strengths of this book is Collins's willingness to ignore Weber's own anti-positivist statements and those of many contemporary 'Websterians' for the purpose of demonstrati ng Weber's talent for sensing the basic and generic properties of human organization. The other major contribution of this volume is the treatment of Weber's work as multidimensional and often contradictory. Weber's sociology is filled with unreconciled dimensions. The most important of these are the emphasis on ideas and the concern with material conditions. Collins's analysis highlights the multidimensionality of Weberian sociology and exposes Weber's own intellectual as well as personal conflicts over idealist versus materialist interpretations of historical processes.
