Spine worn at head and foot; the letters ‘ago’ are chipped from the word ‘phagocytes’ on the spine; foxing, small tears, creasing and rubbing to the wrappers; rear external hinge split; pencil annotations erased from some blank pages; marginal fraying to one leaf; otherwise internally very good.

Obelisk Press,, 1938.. Paperback. VERY GOOD. Very Good. Large (9.5"x6.25") dull green softcover with 3 white title bands on front cover (author, title, publisher/place), Obelisk Press, 324pp, no date of publication, in what appears to be the original plain brown paper wrapper. Assumed to be 2nd (1945) edition---pages and cover are cheap brittle paper; acknowledgements, dedication, and contents preceed title page; price on the rear page is 200 00. Brown wrapper is clean and fresh but a bit torn but has done its job well because book is clean and has been well protected with the exception of a 1" rip in the outer edge of front cover and very minor edgewear. Page edges very tanned. A couple of pages have a tear from outer edge due to their brittleness when page is turned. Paris: The Obelisk Press, 1942. Early edition. Paperback. 324pp. Large octavo [24.5 cm] Green, white and black printed wraps. Very good. The covers are slightly rubbed, creased and scratched. There is a 1 and 1/2 inch closed tear in the paper of the spine. Browned pages. The pages are very occasionally lightly creased. The book is sturdy. According to his daughter, when Henry Miller discovered Europe, particularly Paris, he became acquainted with writers such as Anais Nin, Alfred Perles, and Lawrence Durrell. During the 1930's Miller wrote and published "Tropic of Cancer", "Black Spring", "Aller Retour New York", and "Tropic of Capricorn".

Narrow strip of loss extends 1/2" from top of front joint, with minor chipping to extremities, rubbed rear joint, minor separation along lower joints. Firm, square binding shows one stress crease and minor wrinkling. Text block typically toned. 324 pp. First edition (thus) with "First Published September 1938" notice opposite main title, listing other titles by Miller already published and in preparation..
