Houghton Mifflin Company. Very Good- in Fair dust jacket. 1952. Hardcover. 0395066794 . A first edition with DJ, signed by both Virginia Lee Burton and Frieda Klussman, whom the book is dedicated to. Frieda Klussman is known as the"Cable Car Lady", and is credited with getting the cable car preservation on the ballot to be protected by the voters. A memorial to her is in the SF Cable Car Museum. Artwork by Caldecott winner Virginia Lee Burton is in pastel colors with appropriately victorian swirls. Lovely pictorial, color endpapers. Like Mike Mulligan's Steam Shovel, this book expresses the value of keeping the useful and beautiful vestiges of the past, despite progress. Pages are clean save for child's name inked on first blank page. DJ is more tattered with tears and chips and an old tape repair, also price clipped. Now protected in mylar. Signed by Burton on title page, signed by Klussman under dedication. ; 9.20 x 9.50 x 0.50 inches; 42 pages; Signed by Author .

Near fine. 50 pages. 23.5 x 16 cm. 8 black and white full-page illustrations, decorative page borders. A smoking-themed parody spurred undoubtedly in part by the proliferation of fine press and arts and crafts editions of the Rubaiyat. The editor here concludes the burning need was not more translators, but for more Omars to translate, thus the son of Omar lying undiscovered in the wilds of Borneo sings the praises of tobacco over alcohol. Unobtrusive owner name on cover.
