Vianen (Jan van Vianen) dated 1701 + 49 woodcut initials & ornate figurative metal-cut head- & tail-pieces (some repeats but large & finely detailed).. Quarto gilt-ruled calf (rebacked in leather with original red gilt title label laid on, tips worn) All edges marbled. Engraved Title + Titlepage in red & black with metal cut vignette "In hoc signo" + [28]pp prelims +160pp (inc. at end "Appendix Fabularum a Marquardo Gudio) +[82]pp indices, 99 Fables with 9 extra scenes illustrated in great detail in 108 roundelles. Lacks folding portrait of Prince of Nassau (often omitted), Plate 18 misbound at page 50. Some staining from former damp most evident to early leaves & at end of book but hardly affecting the plates. *Most luxurious of the Dutch Phaedrus editions specially made for the Prince of Nassau (Lamb Annales Phaedriani 96, Cohen-deRicci 797-9, Landwehr 247).

First edition of this justly famous children's book with anthropomorphised kangaroo characters - 'perhaps the best known story entirely devoted to the kangaroo' (Robert Holden 'The Mint Exhibition' 1985). Twelve stories of kangaroos told in verse with many small drawings in sepia and twelve beautifully printed, full-page, partially-coloured plates. Quarto, full colour pictorial boards, edge rubbing, corner wear, chipping of paper at spine ends and along spine edges, two pages with minor nicks at page edge, clean and bright, a very good copy indeed overall.

This book has its own slip case. The slip case has a bump to one corner and a bump to spine area of slip case. See photos.

Wear to cloth on front, a few white marks on back, wear to head and foot of spine, edges and corners. Between front end paper and half title, the paper is partly separted from the inner hinge but still intact. There are 40 color plates illustrated by Edmund Dulac. Black and white illustrations at the beginning of each act. There is a prose description of the story written by A. T. Quiller-Couch. v-xxiv, 143pp.

All illustrations except for one on the title are printed in red. No inscriptions, pencil marks, creases or loose pages. Crisp and bright inside with endpapers matching the boards with silver stars.
