1567 1ed Medicae Artis Principes Byzantine Greek Medicine Surgery HUGE FOLIO
ENORMOUS folio printing of one of the rarest medical texts in the world!
"This is one of the earliest compilations of medical works and was much used in its day…The writings of many of the authors who are included in the voluminous work were note easily available from any other source at that time."(HoH)
'Medicae Artis Principes' is a rare 16th-century medical treatise edited by the famed Henri Estienne. According to Schreiber,
"Estienne's monumental collection of the most important Greek, Roman, and Byzantine medical writers, exclusive Hippocrates and Galen, from Celsus in the first century, to Nicolaus Myrepsus in the 13th. The Oribasius section is illustrated with 43 fine woodcuts, which are bases on those in Gesner's Chirurgia."
Garrison-Morton provides a more extensive list of names of whom Estienne included in this work:
"Contains work of Aretaeus, Rufus of Ephesus, Alexander of Tralles, Paul of Aegina, Oribasius, Sextus Philosophicus, Aetius, Philaretius, Theophilus, Actuarius Zach, Nicholaus Myrepsus Alexandrinus, Celsus, Scribonius Largus, Marcellus Empericus, Quintus Serenus Samonicus."
While 16th-century medical texts are extremely rare in and of themselves, this book is of considerable note. According to Choulant, this Estienne book, specifically, "is more carefully worked than the Aldine edition, especially with the index". It should also be noted that according to the USTC, there are only five known library copies of this book worldwide –one of the rarest medical texts in the world!
