"The medieval and Renaissance manuscripts listed in this Catalogue are part of the Grey Collection, which was presented to the Library in 1861 by Sir George Grey, Governor of the Cape from 1854 to 1861. ... While this catalogue was compiled by Mrs B.V. Churms, Senior Librarian, Special Collections, in connection with an exhibition at the South African Library, it is also intended as a preliminary list for the information of those interested in medieval and Renaissance manuscripts, pending the compilation of the definitive catalogue now in progress." .
