Bozeman, Montana:: Wilderness Adventures Press, 1995.. 1st Printing, this edition.. Hardbound . BINDING/CONDITION: a handsome binding -- bright red cloth with gilt vignette and spine text, ribbon place marker; close examination reveals a few spots to the cloth (not obtrusive); otherwise a Near Fine book, with a Very Good slipcase.. small 4to (10.25 inches tall) . Tan endpapers. Description: Drawings by Eldridge Hardie. Decorative chapter caps. Introduction by Paul Shepard; new foreword by Datus Proper. This was originally written in Lisbon in 1942 as a prologue to a book by a friend of Ortega's called Veinte Anos de caza Mayor (Twenty Years a Big-Game Hunter). The translators' preface explains that Jose Ortega y Gasset was Spain's leading philosopher of the twentieth century and ''it is not surprising then that the drama of the hunt should interest a man whose philosophical stance is based on the drama of biographical life. He looks at hunting from the perspective of what that activity has demanded of a particular individual and what it has meant to him within the context of his life. Finally, Ortega seeks the nature of hunting in the activity itself, considering it in terms of its inherent goal, and taking into account the fact that hunting is an activity that occurs through almost the entire zoological scale. His explanation of the relationship between hunting and man's nature will be found in the text.''
