About This Item

London: T. Bensley, 1801. Very good condition. The botanical specimen Melaleuca hypericifolia is found on the Southeast coast of New South Wales, and its common name is Hillock bush or Red-flowered paperbark. This engraving was made just a few years following the first formal description of the species by English botanist James Edward Smith in 1797 (Transactions of the Linnean Society of London). Smith collected the plant from "swampy ground" in New South Wales. Plate 200 from The Botanist's Repository, for New, and Rare Plants. Copper engraving printed in sepia with original hand color added. 8 1/4 x 10 1/2"
