This fine presentation copy (from the 'father' of Melbourne's liquour reform to the 'mother' of Melbourne's dining culture) is of Melbourne food and wine journalist Michael Harden's seminal work that charts Melbourne's transformation from provincial capital pre-WWII into an internationally renowned destination for gastronomy.
Central to the story was the arrival of a number of European immigrants post WWII, including Mirka and Georges Mora who opened a French-style cafe in 1954, Cafe
Balzac in 1956 (the recipient of Victoria's first restaurant licence) and Tolarno in 1966. Over the years, their venues, adorned with Mirka Mora's now famous murals, came to epitomise the beginnings of the new bohemian confluence of art, dining and culture that Melbourne has become. These nascent beginnings were fragile and limited due to restrictive liquor regulation; and it was not until Professor John Nieuwenhuysen's ground breaking 1988 report recommending sweeping changes to liquor licensing that Melbourne's now famous food and wine culture blossomed.
Mirka Mora [1928-2018] was a French-born Australian visual artist and much-loved cultural figure who contributed significantly to the development of contemporary art in Australia. Her media included drawing, painting, sculpture and mosaic.
