Bound in cloth with gilt lettering. Direct from the Widdrington library at Newton Hall, the 18th century country house and estate in Northumberland, with a pencil shelfmark to the front free-endpaper. In French. With a bookseller label for E. Charlton to the rear pastedown. Catherine II, Empress of Russia, 1729-1796. Aleksandr Ivanovich Herzen, 1812 1870, was a Russian pro-Western writer and thinker known as the father of Russian socialism, and one of the main fathers of agrarian populism. Condition: The binding is tight and firm. The cloth to the rear hinge is split. There is only mild wear to the extremities, with just mild bumping. Internally the pages have some browning and occasional foxing, prominent to the first and last few pages. Overall the condition is very good..
